Montreal, May 27 (UPI) — U. S. District Judge David M. Lechleiter of San Diego, Calif., is hearing a lawsuit against Pfizer Inc. of Montana for conspiring to coerce federal Medicaid funds into paying for the illegal purchase of Viagra and other prescription drugs from Canada.
Lechleiter said that in July 2002, the federal government and Pfizer agreed to pay an estimated $3.3 billion to cover the cost of the illegal purchase of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs from Canada. The federal government, according to Lechleiter, “is seeking to obtain federal money so that the federal government can then negotiate prices with Canada.”
The lawsuit alleged that Pfizer engaged in a multi-year conspiracy to kick off a “substantial” scheme that would have provided kickbacks to consumers and the federal government to pay for the illegal purchase of Viagra, which is also in violation of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Pfizer’s illegal scheme, according to the lawsuit, involved the purchase of Viagra in Canada from Canada for a total cost of $13.5 billion, according to the lawsuit.
